If you’re a golfer, you know the feeling of a perfect swing…it feels amazing!! But if you’re like most golfers, you also know the frustration of inconsistency—one hole you’re striping it, the next you’re slicing into the trees. What if we told you that your body, not just your technique, might be the missing link?
That’s where a Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Golf Assessment comes in. A TPI-trained physiotherapist doesn’t just analyze your swing—they analyze YOU. They look at how your body moves and how it impacts your ability to swing efficiently and pain-free. With golf season just around the corner, now is the perfect time to get assessed and set yourself up for your best season yet!
What is a TPI Golf Assessment?
Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) is the world’s leading educational organization dedicated to the study of how the human body functions in relation to the golf swing. For over twenty years, TPI has gathered the world’s largest technical database of the game’s top Tour professionals as well as every-day golfers. TPI collects 3D motion capture, force, pressure, launch monitor, strength, power, and movement data on every player that is assessed. Using this data, TPI discovered how a properly functioning body allows a player to swing a golf club in the most efficient way possible. Conversely, TPI determined how physical limitations in a player’s body can adversely affect the golf swing and potentially lead to injury. This relationship is what TPI calls The Body-Swing Connection and is the foundation of all TPI certified members.
We believe that golfers should match their swing style to their movement capabilities.
Our philosophy is simple: There are an infinite number of ways to swing a golf club. However, there is one most-efficient way for each player to swing a club and it is based on what they can physically do.
Remember – If you don’t assess, it’s just a guess. To achieve an efficient swing, a golfer must first be screened. A proper screen involves an assessment of swing mechanics, biomechanics, physical fitness, movement quality, current health, and injury history.
The assessment looks at:
- Mobility– Can your body move through the necessary ranges of motion for an efficient swing?
- Stability– Do you have the strength and control to maintain good mechanics?
- Balance & Coordination– Is your body working together to produce a smooth, repeatable swing?
- Power & Strength– Can you generate the force needed for distance and control?
Once the assessment is finished, the results are used to create a plan unique for that golfer. The plan may include fitness training, physical therapy and treatment, coaching of swing mechanics and biomechanics, nutrition, mental strategy or all of the above.
What to Expect in a TPI Golf Assessment
Step 1: Movement Screening
Your physiotherapist will take you through a 16-point movement screen to assess key areas affecting your golf swing, such as:
- Hip and shoulder mobility
- Core strength
- Balance and weight transfer
- Spine and rotational flexibility
Step 2: Swing Analysis
While a TPI assessment isn’t a swing lesson, we’ll analyze how your body’s movement limitations might be affecting your mechanics. We’ll connect your physical abilities to common swing faults, such as an over-the-top move, early extension, or loss of posture.
Step 3: Personalized Plan
Based on your results, we’ll create a plan that includes mobility drills, strength exercises, and movement corrections to optimize your swing mechanics and help you play at your best.
Step 4: Follow-Up & Progress Tracking
We’ll work with you to track your progress, make adjustments, and ensure you’re making the gains you need for an improved game.
The Benefits of a TPI Golf Assessment
1. More Power in Your Swing
Everyone wants more distance off the tee, but brute strength alone won’t cut it. Power comes from a combination of mobility, stability, and proper sequencing. If you lack mobility in your hips, for example, your swing might rely too much on your arms, costing you both power and consistency. A TPI assessment identifies where you’re leaking power and helps you optimize your body’s movement for a stronger, more efficient swing.
2. Improved Accuracy and Consistency
A stiff back, tight shoulders, or weak core muscles can throw off your mechanics, leading to an inconsistent ball flight. By addressing these physical limitations, a TPI-trained physio helps you develop a swing that’s not just powerful but also repeatable. Imagine hitting more greens in regulation and shaving strokes off your score just by improving how your body moves!
3. Prevent Injuries & Play Pain-Free
Golf might seem like a low-impact sport, but it places a lot of stress on the body—especially the lower back, shoulders, and wrists. If you’ve ever felt soreness after a round, it’s likely due to an inefficient movement pattern forcing extra strain on certain joints. A TPI assessment identifies these risks before they turn into chronic pain or injuries. Whether it’s reducing the risk of a herniated disc or avoiding golfer’s elbow, taking care of your body means more time on the course and less time in rehab.
4. Custom Exercises for Your Unique Swing
There is no “one-size-fits-all” golf swing. Your swing should work with your body, not against it. A TPI-trained physio will design a custom exercise program tailored to your specific needs, whether it’s increasing hip mobility, improving rotational strength, or enhancing core stability. These exercises are designed to help you build a swing that feels more natural, efficient, and effortless.
5. Gain a Competitive Edge
Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a competitive golfer, even small improvements can make a big difference. PGA Tour pros like Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, and Dustin Johnson all use TPI-based training to maximize their performance. If it’s good enough for the best players in the world, imagine what it can do for your game!
Who Should Get a TPI Golf Assessment?
